ITIL® Certifications
Boost your career in IT Service Management with an ITIL® Certification. ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) is the most widely accepted approach to IT service management, providing a cohesive set of best practices drawn from public and private sectors globally.
What is ITIL® 4 Certification?
ITIL® 4 Certification is a globally recognised framework for IT service management that helps organisations and individuals understand and implement best practices for delivering efficient IT services. ITIL®, which stands for Information Technology Infrastructure Library, provides a comprehensive set of practices for managing IT services throughout their lifecycle, from development and deployment to maintenance and improvement. The ITIL® 4 version, released in 2019, represents the latest evolution of the framework, incorporating modern approaches to IT service management, such as Agile, DevOps, and Lean, to better align with the dynamic and fast-paced nature of today's digital environments.
Achieving ITIL® 4 Certification involves passing a series of exams that test one's knowledge and understanding of the ITIL® principles, practices, and methodologies. The certification is structured in a tiered system, starting with the ITIL® Foundation, which provides a broad overview of the key concepts and terminologies. As individuals progress, they can pursue higher-level certifications, such as ITIL® Managing Professional (MP) and ITIL® Strategic Leader (SL), which offer more specialised knowledge and skills for managing complex IT projects and driving strategic initiatives within an organisation. Earning ITIL® 4 Certification not only enhances one's career prospects but also helps organisations improve their IT service delivery, reduce costs, and achieve greater efficiency and customer satisfaction.
ITIL® 4 Certification Levels
There are four certification levels within the ITIL® 4 scheme:
- ITIL® 4 Foundation
- ITIL® 4 Managing Professional
- ITIL® 4 Practice Manager
- ITIL® 4 Strategic Leader
ITIL® 4 Foundation
The ITIL® 4 Foundation Certificate in IT Service Management is a pre-requisite for other ITIL® 4 qualifications. The examination if a 1 hour, closed book, multiple choice paper of 40 questions taken on completion of the course or shortly afterwards. The pass mark is 65% (26 out of 40).
ITIL® 4 Managing Professional
The ITIL® 4 Managing Professional designation provides practical and technical knowledge about how to run successful IT-enabled services, teams, and workflows, for a variety of professionals working in IT, IT service management (ITSM) and other digital roles across the business. It is comprised of the following for certifications:
- ITIL® 4 Specialist: Create, Deliver and Support (CDS)

ITIL® 4 Practice Manager
Defined as "a set of organisational resources for performing work or accomplishing an objective", there are 34 ITIL® management practices in total, representing some of the most practical resources in the ITIL® framework.
Whereas ITIL® 4 Foundation introduces the management practices as concepts, the hands-on learning, and steps to apply the concepts happens in the practice modules. Validation of those skills happens with certification. Each individual practice course is intended for professionals who want to prove and validate their skills in specific practice areas, but certification as a Practice Manager requires a broader set of skills within a minimum of 5 practices that fall within three management practice domains.
If you are an IT Professional interested in achieving the Practice Manager qualification, then you are seeking to establish good cross-practice collaboration and effective service value streams in your organisation. To do this you must complete any 5 individual practices, or you must complete one of the 3-day domain-based bundles:
- ITIL® 4 Specialist: Monitor, Support and Fulfil + exam
- ITIL® 4 Specialist: Plan, Implement and Control + exam
- ITIL® 4 Specialist: Collaborate, Assure and Improve + exam
You will be awarded the ITIL® 4 Practice Manager designation once you have successfully achieved the ITIL® Specialist: Create, Deliver an Support module plus 1 of the above bundles of the practice manage certifications.
The ITIL® 4 Practice Manager Certification must be renewed every three years.
ITIL® 4 Strategic Leader
The ITIL® 4 Strategic Leader designation will enable current and aspiring leaders to recognise the value of adopting and adapting ITIL® for all IT-enabled products and services, not just for IT operations.
This designation will also help professionals to understand how IT can influence and shape business strategy and provide guidance on managing and operationalising the strategy across the organisation. It is comprised of the two certifications:
- ITIL® 4 Strategist: Direct, Plan and Improve (DPI) - Universal certification that forms part of the Managing Professional (MP) and Strategic Leader (SL) designation.
- ITIL® 4 Leader: Digital and IT Strategy (DITS)
ITIL® 4 Master
The ITIL® 4 Master is the highest level of achievement of the ITIL® 4 certification scheme. ITIL® 4 Master recognises that you have gained the universal and diverse knowledge developed during your ITIL® training and certification journey and have mastered the full suite of the ITIL® competencies.
To be awarded the ITIL® 4 Master designation, candidates must have achieved the Practice Manager (PM), Managing Professional (MP) and Strategic Leader (SL) designations. By combining the PM, MP, and SL designations, the ITIL® 4 Master demonstrates the capability to apply the principles, concepts, methods and techniques from ITIL® in the workplace at strategic, tactical and operational levels.
The ITIL® 4 Masters understand business requirements, know how to develop a clear strategy and plan, implement them using practical methods and tools, lead cross-functional teams to achieve growth and success for the organisation.
The path to achieving the ITIL® 4 Master includes multiple exams which assess your ability to understand, apply and analyse many ITSM concepts, methods, and tools. This includes a case-based assessment on Digital and IT Strategy, detailed study of at least five management practices or at least one of the specialist Practice Manager tracks combined with Create, Deliver and Support, and assessment on all four of the Managing Professional modules.
The ITIL® 4 Master is the pinnacle of a long and demanding journey but a truly rewarding and valuable experience for anyone who achieves it.
